Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems can be deployed faster and more economically than light rail transit (LRT) systems and present opportunities for mass transit that provide a similar customer experience through the utilisation of high-specification, high-capacity bi-articulated electric buses.

Direx Solutions was engaged by DB Engineering & Consulting as Technical Advisor, performing the roles of Technical Director and Transport Planner for a BRT system that would provide sustainable traffic solutions and address future traffic congestion demands of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our responsibilities included overseeing the development and coordination of the pre-concept design, defining the electric fleet requirements and specifications, development of the concept of operations (ConOps) and concept of maintenance, outlining a charging solution with off-grid energy storage, and providing initial asset briefs.

The pre-concept design included verification of the feasibility of BRT over LRT for a medium density development. The route would operate between residential, commercial and industrial zones, ensuring that the design fully integrated with the evolving Detailed Master Plan and demand forecasts.

Direx Solutions also led extensive benchmarking and engagement with key stakeholders to incorporate current best practice in electric BRT systems.
